The Sunset Strip was arguably where heavy rock was born. The Who, The Kinks and Led Zeppelin all played their first US shows at The Whisky a Go Go, turning what had been a hippy hangout into a more raucous affair. The Hyatt House on the Strip became known as the ‘riot house’ for all the groupies, parties and drummers riding motorbikes up and down its corridors. But hidden away just off the Strip was a far more private and – initially – a quieter place for musicians to stay: the Sunset Marquis.
